Artificial intelligence systems increasingly participate in institutions. My research, at the intersection of social ontology, philosophy of AI, and ethics, examines how AI systems can participate in institutional action and how their integration can alter the social and moral properties of the groups to which they belong.Â
I also work more broadly in AI ethics, including ongoing interdisciplinary research on deception by AI systems.
Finally, I use character-based approaches to think about how we can live well with emerging technologies. In a series of papers, I explore how the virtue of temperance can help us navigate a world saturated with digital technologies.
